Manual Focusing with Irix Lenses – Full Control Over Every Shot
Posted on: 08/12/2025By Marcin FManual focusing is an art that requires patience, but rewards you with complete control over the frame. With Irix lenses, this technique takes on a new dimension – thanks to thoughtful design and practical features, you can refine every detail of a photo or video shot. Discover how to use manual focusing to give your work even more character and precision.
Control over every shot
Manual focusing is a working method that gives photographers and filmmakers full authority over what appears in the focus plane. In an age where autofocus is fast and effective, many creators still choose manual mode – not out of nostalgia, but out of a desire for full control. In Irix lenses, designed with manual focusing in mind, this creative freedom is supported by solutions that make the entire process intuitive. This allows you to adjust focus to specific needs – whether in landscape photography, macro, or filmmaking, where smooth focus transitions determine how a shot is perceived.
This means that a photographer or filmmaker can fine-tune the focus even in challenging conditions – in low light, low-contrast scenes, or when working with techniques that demand absolute precision. Manual focusing also gives greater creative freedom – allowing you to deliberately choose the point that will capture the viewer's attention and to introduce smooth focus transitions that give the image the right dynamics.
Working in manual mode requires a bit more involvement than autofocus, but it also allows you to develop your skills and the ability to anticipate results. As a result, each subsequent shot becomes more conscious and deliberate, and the process of taking pictures – more satisfying.

Precise Irix focusing rings
Large, easy-to-use focusing rings are a hallmark of Irix lenses. Thanks to balanced resistance and the right focus throw length, you can set focus precisely even with a very shallow depth of field. The distinct texture of the ring allows comfortable operation in all conditions – even at low temperatures or in darkness. In practice, this means that whether you are focusing on the stars on a cool night or on a moving subject during reportage, you have full control over every millimeter of rotation.
For a photographer or filmmaker, this means confidence that hand movements translate into exactly the desired effect. In landscape photography, it allows smooth transition from the foreground to focus on the horizon; in macro photography – to precisely capture the focus point on a detail just a few millimeters in size; and in filmmaking – to guide focus in a smooth and repeatable manner. Such refined ergonomics also help develop the so-called muscle memory – after some time, you instinctively know how to position the ring to immediately reach the desired distance, saving time in the field.
Manual focusing support – additional features
Irix manual lenses offer solutions that make manual focusing easier. These functions allow you to work faster and more consciously, instead of repeating test shots. There is also the option to calibrate focus (only with 11mm and 15mm lenses) for a specific camera and clear depth of field scale markings – particularly useful when using the hyperfocal technique or when you want maximum sharpness across the entire frame. Thanks to this, manual focusing becomes a predictable and repeatable process, not a matter of chance.
The Focus Lock feature allows you to fix the ring in the selected position when you set the focus to infinity and want to ensure that nothing changes it. The noticeable “click” at infinity is an additional signal that you have reached the correct setting – without the need to constantly check through the viewfinder or on the screen.

When to use manual focusing?
Manual mode is invaluable in situations where autofocus may struggle or when you expect more from the frame than “average” sharpness. Photographing the night sky, shooting against the light, filming with smooth focus pulls, or taking shots with minimal depth of field – in all these situations, manual focusing delivers better results.
Photographing with the depth of field scale or pre-focusing (before the subject enters the frame) are techniques that can be fully controlled in manual mode. Importantly, working in this mode builds the habit of conscious seeing – you start to notice the relationship between focus, aperture, and composition, which pays off in every subsequent session.
It is also a great solution for creative work. You can deliberately set focus on the background, leaving the foreground slightly blurred to give the frame depth and mystery. In portraiture, you decide whether the emphasis is on the eyes, hands, or another detail. In landscapes, setting the hyperfocal point ensures that both the foreground and distant elements remain sharp.
Complete creative freedom
Manual focusing in Irix lenses combines precise mechanics, ergonomics, and features that support fieldwork. It gives photographers and filmmakers the tools to consciously shape the image, without relying on automatic systems. This way, every shot is the result of your decision, not the camera's algorithm. For some, it is a path to greater creativity; for others – a method for achieving maximum image quality. Regardless of the motivation, it allows you to combine technical precision with artistic freedom, which in photography and film is an absolutely priceless combination.
