Irix Cine 15mm T2.6: Filming in Tight Spaces

Filming in confined spaces – such as inside a car, narrow corridor, or small room – comes with specific challenges. It is difficult to fit much of the set into the frame while maintaining natural perspective and sharpness. Cinematographers often use wide-angle lenses that visually enlarge the space, making the interior appear deeper. Introducing the Irix Cine 15mm T2.6, an ultra-wide filmmaking tool that captures an enormous field of view (approx. 110°) with minimal image distortion.

Wide angle – expanding space in the frame

Thanks to its wide angle, the 15mm Irix Cine T2.6 allows you to capture much more within the frame, which is often crucial in tight spaces. It has a 110° field of view, making it much easier to show the entire scene, even in confined areas. A wider angle (compared to a standard lens) makes interiors appear more expressive, while foreground and background elements gain greater separation. These effects help filmmakers achieve a more cinematic perspective while still fitting all essential details into the frame.

Irix 15mm T2.6 – specifications and advantages

The Irix Cine 15mm T2.6 is a fast lens suitable for resolutions up to 8K. It is designed for working in various lighting conditions, making it an extremely versatile tool. Its optical construction contains 15 elements in 11 groups (including low-dispersion ED and aspherical elements), ensuring exceptional sharpness and color saturation. Such a complex design practically eliminates most geometric distortions – a rare feature for wide-angle lenses. The lens also offers smooth aperture control, which is particularly important for filmmaking.

Filming in Tight Spaces

Distortion-free image and minimal focus breathing

The precise construction of the Irix Cine 15mm lens guarantees almost no distortion while maintaining straight-line perspective, so even at very wide angles, elements at the edges of the frame remain sharp and true. High-quality construction also minimizes “lens breathing,” meaning focus changes do not significantly alter the angle of view, allowing smooth, professional focus transitions without noticeable distortions. This is particularly useful in moving shots where the operator must quickly refocus on different subjects.

Durability and weather resistance

The Irix Cine 15mm T2.6 also stands out with a solid construction designed for demanding conditions. The body is made of aluminum and magnesium, with all critical areas properly sealed (four key points with rubber gaskets). This makes the lens dust and splash-resistant, enabling filming even in challenging weather or environments (rain, sand). Additionally, all important markings on the barrel are laser-engraved and filled with UV fluorescent paint, making them clearly visible even in low light.

Ergonomics and accessory compatibility

The lens is lightweight, weighing only about 0.96–1.1 kg (depending on the mount), allowing easy handling even on small handheld cameras or stabilizers. The 180° focus rotation provides precise focusing at any distance, and the dedicated Adaptive Ring simplifies follow-focus use. The front element has a large 86mm filter thread and includes the MMS magnetic system for fast installation and exchange of filters and lens hoods. This allows quick filter changes, valuable during dynamic shooting.

Filming in Tight Spaces

Practical use in tight spaces

The Irix Cine 15mm T2.6 excels where a wide frame matters in confined spaces. Its wide angle allows capturing a larger part of the scene and showing interior details without moving away from the “subject” in the frame. The bright T2.6 aperture also enables work in low indoor light, for example with cockpit lights or dark rooms. Its lightweight and stable construction make it easy to use on gimbals or steadicams, ensuring smooth, dynamic shots in small rooms or vehicles.

Wide perspective in narrow frames

The Irix Cine 15mm T2.6 combines an ultra-wide field of view with professional image quality. With almost zero distortion, high brightness, and solid construction, it is an indispensable tool for filming in confined spaces. This lens allows directors and operators to unleash creativity even in the most limited conditions – all details fit in the frame, and images retain cinematic quality.
