Irix Edge MMS Vari ND 2-5

€225.00

Irix Edge VariND 2-5 is a filter specially designed for our revolutionary Magnetic Mount System. Thanks to no screw mount, it became one of the thinnest and lightest Vari ND filters on the market, around 51% slimmer than most available today. With less than 5mm thickness, it’s less than three quarters stacked on each other. That prevents any vignetting, even on the wide lenses.  A no-slip finish on the bottom makes sure the filter will stay in one place while being attached just by magnets.

What is VariND? A variable ND filter uses two polarizing elements. Rotating them changes how much light passes through the filter, so one filter can cover several exposure levels instead of carrying a separate fixed ND for each one.

VariND in film production A common approach in video is to keep shutter speed tied to the chosen frame rate and use aperture for the look you want. In bright light, a variable ND lets you reduce incoming light without closing the iris just to correct exposure. The 2-5 stop adjustment is made by rotating the filter.

2-5 stops The filter is limited to a marked 2-5 stop range. This makes exposure changes repeatable and avoids the extreme end of variable-ND rotation, where artefacts, colour shifts or loss of sharpness can become more noticeable.

Light control at your fingertips When the light changes, you can adjust density by rotating the filter rather than removing one ND and fitting another.

The neutral color The filter is intended to reduce light while keeping colour and contrast as neutral as possible throughout its stated 2-5 stop range.

Super Resistant to survive any conditions The filter uses toughened SR glass and protective surface treatments intended to resist scratches, dust and oil. Its two polarizing elements are specified with 12 coating layers each, 24 layers in total.

European Brand Irix Edge is a European brand. The filters are designed, tested and refined in Europe using measurement equipment and established quality-control procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Answers to common questions about the Irix Edge MMS Vari ND 2-5 filter.

1. What is the Irix Edge MMS Vari ND 2-5 for?
It is a magnetic variable ND filter that lets you change light reduction by rotating the filter instead of swapping between several fixed ND filters.
2. What does the 2-5 range mean?
The working range covers 2 to 5 stops of light reduction. The scale is marked, which makes it easier to return to a previous exposure setting.
3. Which Irix Cine lenses can use this front-mounted MMS filter?
It fits Irix Cine lenses equipped with the front Magnetic Mount System. The 11mm T4.3 and 21mm T1.5 are the exceptions; those two lenses do not accept front-mounted Irix Edge MMS filters.
4. Why is a variable ND useful for filming?
It lets you keep a chosen aperture and shutter speed while the light level changes. You adjust the filter density instead of changing those camera settings.
5. Why is the range limited to 2-5 stops?
The product is intentionally limited to this range. The original product data notes that variable ND filters can show more artefacts and colour or sharpness changes near extreme rotation, so the working range avoids that part of the adjustment.
6. How does it differ from a fixed ND filter?
A fixed ND gives one exact reduction value. This filter covers several values between 2 and 5 stops, which is more convenient when the light changes during a take or between shots.
7. What is the filter made from?
This version uses two polarizing elements. The product data specifies 12 coating layers on each element, 24 in total, together with SR glass and surface protection against scratches, dust and oil.
